Bora Aksu SS12

Bora Aksu Spring 2012 - Backstage

I had never heard of Bora Aksu previously, but this collection certainly piqued my interest. It was inspired by Edwardian postcards from a Geneva antique market. This could possibly be one of my top shows this season! It just appeals to my sweet side, but satisfies my love for color and edge with the use of sheers and various blues (and a few pinks, too), and you know i was all over the flower headband department. The almost burnt petals on the runway subverted the obvious romantic message for a darker one. It's the gloominess of an era gone by, of losing something important. The dark eyes and ripped tights seen on almost every model contributed to the dead glamour vibe. Oh look! A dark perversion of an otherwise romantic concept! My fall vibes are all over it, y'all.
Also, I realize the past month or so has basically been show reviews, which can't be the most exciting read. I'm trying to mix it up with posts of a varying nature, but Fashion Week is that kind of thing I have to write about NOW or risk forgetting about completely. Nevertheless, I have a busy weekend ahead of me and some serious photo-taking to be part of. ANOTHER SHANA TOVA TO ALL MY JEWS UP IN THE CLUB!

No one mourns the wicked

I had to say it: the following editorial reminded me of a more fashionable rogue Elphaba. That's not to say I don't love it, it's just the preoccupation with shades of green that spurs the comparison. Anyway...

Just stunning. I love the layering, the makeup, the accessories, everything.
Happy Rosh Hashanah fellow Jews!

This might be one of the most exciting and unique runways I've seen in a while. Perhaps ever. I like how the whole show was monotone (not boring. never boring) and then the last four looks in purple came out, complete with absolutely insane insectoid headpieces. Seriously, they looked like a liquid version of the violet inferno raging behind them. Overall, it was a supremely creative and innovative collection to remember for posterity's sake.

How awesome was this show? The dream duo of Donatella Versace paired with Christopher Kane came up with the most wonderful concept of basketball players and their cheerleaders. While basketball wasn't entirely present in the clothing, I wasn't particularly bothered. This is especially fitting as school is back in session and I've grown nostalgic after reading Rookie for three hours on Sunday. It's a veritable addiction my friends! Anyway, I really need to study for AP Bio, so a heartfelt goodbye from me.

Fanny's Your Aunt

Don't I just look so incredibly cool with my wayfarers and DIY bow tie? So incredibly cool. Narcissism aside, my life has been incredibly hectic as of late. Julius Caesar (my fall show) is officially under way, and costumes need to be dealt with and lines learned and scenes blocked. Add an AP and my extracurriculars and Bob's your uncle. What about all you students out there? How's your experience thus far?

Album of the Month September 2011

St. Vincent
Strange Mercy
★★★★★

I waited a very long time for this album. I got into St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) when her last album, Actor, came out in 2009. I shuddered with anticipation, heaved with expectation, shook with excitement. When the blessed day of September 13th finally arrived, I sat down in my bed and popped in the CD (yes, I still own a stereo), and listened. When it was finished, I only felt one thing: disappointment. What the shit had I just listened to? At the time, all I heard was bizarre guitar snarls, weird instruments, and some admittedly gorgeous vocals. Before I allowed myself to enter a maudlin state, I decided to give it a second try. And a third. And a fourth. Around the fifth time, I literally began to dance around my room and yowl like an injured cat. I finally got it! Eureka! This was real music! I am quite literally infatuated with this album. I realized its complexity only after repeated listens. It's a mix of the sincerity of her first album with the experimentation of her second. It feels like a totally personal thing even with all the grandiose instrumentation. Above it all, Annie Clark's voice exudes icy charm. A highly recommended listen to all!

Sometimes Jason Wu gets a little too ladylike for my taste, but then he throws me for a loop and puts out some totally swank pieces! My particular favorites were the super short shorts, all of the collared shirts, and all the color he threw in here and there. I'm a big fan of the final two gowns; One in a shocking chartreuse and the other, the tried and true T-shirt and evening skirt combination. The best part of the show, though? By far the hair and makeup!

Here we have my personal favorite lipstick color, orange, paired with slightly defined brows and clean face. And the hair, holy crap! I think it looked gorgeous and helped elevate the collection from just a bunch of pretty clothes to something more interesting and appealing.
